Saturday, January 23, 2010 Space Unit: Day 6

Today was our last day of the space unit. I was kind of sad to finish this up because the boys had so much fun learning about the solar system. They now know the planets in order, what planets are made of of rock and gas, what a dwarf planet is, about asteroids, and Lincoln will tell you "Pluto is not a planet anymore". They really soaked everything up!

Here, Greyson is coloring in his 4th block of his book. This means he gets to move on to a new book next week.

Today, we talked about the Earth and why it is so special. We also talked about how we should care for our planet and why we celebrate Earth Day.

Greyson drew his solar system. He drew them in order and numbered them. He was so particular about coloring the planets the same color as his poster.

Working on his writing for the day. Words for the day: moon, gravity, crater.

Lincoln also tried tracing a few letters. He is getting there. He really does try and focus. I am pretty impressed, since he is only two.

We still need to finish our paper mache' planets and when they are done I will add them. We had a light last day of class. They did watch a Magic Schoolbus about Earth Day and they played a tic tac toe game on Playhouse Disney where they had to answer an Earth Day Question.

Friday, January 15, 2010 Day 5: Space Unit

Greyson was reading his book to Lincoln. I didn't have to help him figure out any of the words!!

We also read the book The North Wind and the Sun. It was really cute. The wind challenged the sun by saying that he was stronger than the sun. We found out in the end who was really the strongest!

I thought these pictures were so cute. They were both so proud of writing the letter E on their own. Lincoln did both of those E's completely by himself. I was helping Greyson and turned around and that was what Lincoln had put up on the board. Very proud of himself!!

Greyson did his letters on his own too. We are working on taking our time and starting at the top of the letter, not from the bottom. They both LOVE using the dry erase board.

Practicing writing his name.

Read about the sun and why it is such an important part of our lives. Gave lots of information about the sun.

Greyson and Lincoln finished their sun craft that they started Wednesday. We added it to our "sun" wall.

Greyson working on his math work. Writing the numbers 1-5.

Lincoln working hard too. He really tries to copy the numbers and is recognizing the number he is tracing.

Greyson's finished paper. He has really improved writing his numbers, although 3's still give him some trouble. For Science class, they boys watched a Magic School Bus video about being lost in space. Love that series!

Book #2 in the reading series. It focuses on the site words it & is.

Just a sample of what the book is like. So simple, but the series has really helped Greyson look for clues in the pictures and stop and think about what word he is looking at.

He is doing a great job!! He can now read 4 site words and even Lincoln is recognizing 2 of them.

Look at the Moon is a book about how wherever you are in the world, we are all under the same moon.

Our color of the day was orange. This book just happened to follow along using our site words it & is.

They used red and yellow finger paint and had to mix it together to make orange. We will be using this project for later in the week to make a sun.

They both love finger painting and it was a great way for them to see the colors blending together to make orange.

For History, we started talking about the Astronauts and how they were able to live on a space ship. This book, I want to be an Astronaut, was a simple book but gave an explanation of what it is like to be an astronaut.

After we read our book, Greyson and Lincoln made Astronaut food (Chocolate pudding in a baggie)

Enjoying their dessert. Greyson kept saying they were pretending to be astronauts.

During Math, we started to discuss the phases of the moon and how the moon changes every night. It was fun looking back at what the moon looked like on our birthdays. We also watched a short video explaining how the moon changes.

The boys didn't have school today, but I had found this great puzzle of the solar system in the bargain book section at Borders and thought it went great with our solar system unit. It's a huge floor puzzle and was easy enough for both of the boys to put together. They even learned some new facts after putting the puzzle together and reading the captions about each planet.
